detoxing life

I have been wanting to start a blog FOREVER. Finding the time is another story. I’m in the middle of training our new puppy (Frankie, a 16 week German shepherd border collie mix), launching my May Group Coaching program, managing the household and trying to get my kids from continuing squatting on my bedroom floor, I decided to just jump right in. Because there is never the perfect time for anything.

One of the things on my mind lately is sharing how I have slowly been de-toxing my home and life. Detoxing our homes is so important to improve our overall well-being. Indoor air can be up to FIVE TIMES more pollutant than outdoor air. How insane is that?! Pollutants from things like household cleaners can cause allergies, respiratory problems and contribute to fatigue. Kids are more susceptible to pollutants because their bodies are developing.

On top of this, I learned about growing evidence around hormone disruptors from things like BPA and phthalates (chemicals in plastics), chemicals in cosmetics, and fragrances in things like candles and self-care products, all being linked with early puberty, especially amongst young girls.

So instead of freaking the F out, I am just doing what I can, where I can. Slowly detoxing my home and life. A full overhaul on our homes, cleaning products, self-care products, etc can feel overwhelming! My best advice is just as I advise my coaching clients when they’re trying to make lasting, impactful change. Change one thing at a time.

Here are the FREE things we do to detox:

  • Open the windows morning and night for up to 20 minutes to let fresh air in.

  • Close the toilet lid before flushing - the vortex from the flush releases particles into the air. No thanks.

  • Keep tooth brushes in drawers or holders with the bristle side covered, so that air contaminates don’t affect them.

  • Turn your phone to airplane mode at night or turn your WiFi totally off at night to reduce EMF exposure.

  • Limit exposure to fragrance. I’m trying to find a balance on this one myself, by using organic candles like these. I have yet to give up my favorite perfume. We’re aiming for progress, not perfection.

Home product detoxes:

  • Switch from hormone disrupting dryer sheets to wool balls or organic dryer sheets made with natural essential oils.

  • Swap to organic laundry detergent.

  • Swap all bleach and commercial cleaning products with all-natural cleaning products. I like Ever Spring Brand and Branch Basics. I moved all of our bleach and non-organic cleaners to a bin in our shed. My husband pulled out the Clorox a few weeks after I banned it, and I immediately had a headache when I smelled it in our bathroom! Our bodies are give us cues when things are not good for us. This was a perfect example.

  • Move pesticides and paints away from the house. Ours are boxed in air-tight containers and stored in our shed.

  • I’ve yet to install a filtration system to our home water, although it’s on my list! Until then, I love these Jolie Showered filters.

  • Install free-standing air filters in the main rooms of your home. We have these affordable ones in the living room and bedrooms.

  • Replace your air filters every 3 months.

This is an excellent podcast to learn more about detoxing our homes!

Skincare and makeup:

This is a category that’s going to take some time! It’s expensive to do a full overhaul. And frankly, I love my Patrick Ta and Charlotte Tilbury products. But health is of utmost importance to me. I recently scooped up a few clean beauty products and the winners are:

Saie Liquid Bronzer and Haus of Labs Cream Blush

I used these at the White House Correspondents Pre-Dinner Party and filmed a full Get Ready With Me here, and linked all my products here.

I’ll be back next week with more shares. Until then, sending blessings and good health your way.
